The global growth of Computed Tomography (CT) procedures is leading to increased global demand for iodine contrast media (ICM). Based on this advancement, we estimate that demand for contrast media will continue to increase in the coming years1.
In order to address this growing demand, significant continued capacity investment is required to ensure secure future supply and peace of mind for clinicians across radiology suites and interventional departments globally.
This includes our 4 STEP PLAN: from extraction to injection
1. Securing and Protecting Iodine Supply1
GE HealthCare have established a multi-year agreement with SQM, a Chile-based mining company as well as long-term supply agreements in Japan. This will enable us to secure increasing supply of iodine, a key ingredient for contrast media products used in X-Ray and CT imaging procedures.
The agreement will see an increased supply of iodine raw material year-on-year to enable the production of 30% more patient doses of ICM annually by 20251.
2. Producing More API For More Iodine Contrast Media
In our Lindesnes site, we are investing $80 million to expand our active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) capacity by ~30% by 20251.
3. Producing More Doses in Our Secondary Manufacturing Fill and Finish Sites
We’re investing to expand capacity at our Secondary Manufacturing Fill and Finish Sites to produce ~30% more patient doses by 20251.
As part of this, GE HealthCare are investing in production capacity to help meet this growing demand, including the opening of a new $30 million production line at our Secondary Manufacturing Fill and Finish Site in Cork, Ireland, to grow capacity there by 30%.
4. Maximized Usage of ICM by enabling personalized dosing, reducing wasted contrast media, and improving workflow
To enable more patient throughput, and personalized dosing we are:
Costs are Increasing
Price of iodine has increased by more than 200% from 2017 to 20231
Production costs for iodine contrast media have increased year on year
