The global growth of Computed Tomography (CT) procedures is leading to increased global demand for iodine contrast media (ICM). Based on this advancement, we estimate that volume demand for ICM will double in the next ten years1.
In order to secure future supply, significant investment is needed which includes a 4-STEP PLAN: securing a long-term iodine supply, producing more Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) for ICM in our primary manufacturing site, producing more doses in our secondary fill & finish manufacturing sites and maximising the use of iodine contrast media.
1. Securing Long-Term Agreements to Ensure Future Iodine Supply
GE Healthcare have established a long-term agreement enabling us to secure increasing supply of iodine, a key ingredient for contrast media products used in X-Ray and CT imaging procedures.
The agreement will see an increase supply of iodine raw material year-on-year and is part of GE Healthcare’s broader commitment and investment plan to enable the production of 30% more patient doses of ICM annually by 20251.
2. Producing More API For More Iodine Contrast Media
In our Lindesnes site, we are investing to expand our active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) capacity by ~30% by 20251 .
3. Producing More Doses in Our Secondary Manufacturing Fill and Finish Sites
We’re investing to expand capacity at our fill and finish facilities to produce ~30% more patient doses by 20251.
As part of this, GEHC are investing in production capacity to help meet this growing demand, including a new $30 million manufacturing line at its Cork, Ireland, contrast media production facility, which opened in 2022.
4. Maximized Usage of ICM by Enabling Personalized Dosing, Improved Workflow and return of ICM for re-use
To enable more patient throughput, personalized dosing, larger multidose package and iodine recycling we are:
Costs are Increasing
Price of iodine has increased by 120% from 2019 to 2022 with rises set to continue3
Pricing will face further pressure with global inflation predicted to be 6%-10% this year4
